Risk is more than market volatility. It also includes liquidity, concentration, and the ability to stay with a plan.
Define what risk means
For some families, risk means a decline in account value. For others, it means insufficient cash when needed or a lasting loss of purchasing power. These concerns require different conversations.
Consider multiple sources
Market, credit, concentration, currency, liquidity, and operational risks can overlap. A portfolio may appear stable in ordinary conditions while still facing vulnerabilities in an unexpected scenario.
Plan for difficult periods
Scenario analysis asks how a plan might respond under different conditions. Such exercises cannot predict the future, but they can reveal assumptions and support a discussion about tolerable losses and available cash.
Revisit assumptions
Risk tolerance and financial capacity are not the same. Both may change as family needs, obligations, or markets evolve. Periodic review with qualified professionals can help keep the plan relevant.
